Fazil Maniar is a conceptual artist that explores the edges of the lived experience. His practice is rooted in his personal history of pain, identity and cultural dislocation. Growing up in the 1980’s and 90’s in England as part of a diaspora, He experienced a quiet abandonment as his immigrant parents were immersed in building a new life. He felt the need to perform a new identity by necessity to adhere to Britishness at the cost of his Asian heritage in order to seek safety, belonging and love. Alongside this, spirituality forms a vital thread in his practice as an intimate space of healing, grounding and quiet resistance.
His Practice is driven by the experience of embodiment through the derive where the inner and outer drift between the abstract landscapes of the mind and the sensory pull of the world, letting chance encounters breath meaning into his craft.
His art lives in the oscillation between interior and exterior worlds. Being multi disciplined his work is driven through expanded performance, as he tests to the edges of the self, to seek truth and dwell in the rawness where the pain can be used for growth. His work holds the concepts of grief, memory and displacement in order for change to begin. Its a gesture where life creates a way to find a way, to create a space for healing and for the expansion of the self.
